Soapies v Books.
I’m very proud of myself. This week I have not watched a single soap opera. I normally watch quite a number. I always tune in to Rhythm City around 6.30, Scandal at 7, Generations at 8 and sometimes Muvhango at 9.
Now, this has obviously resulted in me not studying hard enough. I’m a soapie addict and I bet I’m not alone. Though I doubt there are that many guys who suffer from this syndrome. When I tell people I can’t get enough of soapies, they shocked. They see soapies as the domain of girls. I had one lady standing up for me and saying I have a feminine side. I’m not sure if that is a good thing. But I’m working on curing my addiction. At least until after the exams are over.
But honestly, if we compare books and soapies, for me soapies win hands down. Academic books are often quite dull and tedious to read. I wish there was a subject where we read books like Harry Potter or some Sidney Sheldon and Danielle Steele stuff. I for one would totalise such a subject. I heard that in English linguistics they are studying Japanese. I wonder how they are finding it. Most people struggle to study English, let alone a language like Japanese.
Soapies are full of drama, passion, intrigue, suspense and more. Of course, they do lose the plot sometimes and become too unrealistic, but they are generally a great thing to watch. Unfortunately, there is no benefit in watching them. Unless you are doing it for the purpose of studying Narrative and Genre. Still, it will be hard for me to continue depriving myself the pleasure of visiting soapieland. But I’ll have to persevere. After all, I have a degree to obtain.
